Why an ebook and not a paperback
Type size is the reason. A printed book fixes the type at whatever the publisher chose; an ebook lets you set it as large as it needs to be, which for many readers is the difference between reading and giving up. You can also print any page you want on ordinary paper — which is often easier to hold than a book anyway.
